Beachcombing For Exercise, Fun And Profit
If you enjoy going to the beach near where you live, or perhaps where you go on holiday, you might consider doing some beachcombing. It is very fun to discover fascinating and possibly valuable trinkets in the sand. Perhaps you will find one or more things that are worth a lot of money. But even if you just want to prospect on the shore for personal amusement, a beach walk is an excellent way to get some fresh air and exercise.
To maximize your chances of finding plenty of interesting objects, try to tailor your beach visit. If you check to see when the tides are at their low point, you will have more area to search in. You may also be the first to spot something that has just been washed ashore. If you can find a beach less visited by crowds, you will also have less competition for whatever treasures are there. However, do not go anywhere really remote by yourself, for safety reasons. Take a beach-loving friend or two with you.
You will want to take along some supplies and equipment to make your trip more comfortable and productive. Make sure to have some bags or containers to hold the treasures you find. You may want to take some waterproof gloves to wear to protect your hands when digging around in the sand. And speaking of sand, you no doubt will carry a lot of it back to your vehicle, so make sure to have a cordless handheld vacuum with you to clean up any mess. Other supplies might include towels, drinking water, and of course sunscreen. If you are focusing on finding jewelry or other metal objects such as coins, a metal detector might be a good investment. They come in a variety of price levels, and it could pay for itself if you make a lucky find.
If you are lucky in your prospecting, you may find some beach glass. This is much sought after by collectors and also by jewelry makers, who fashion it into unique pieces such as pendants and rings. Beach glass is bits of broken bottles or other objects that have been worn smooth by being tumbled around in the ocean for long periods. This, as well as contact with sand and other materials, produces a frosted look and texture.
Another item much sought after by beachcombers is, of course, jewelry. People who go swimming and surfing sometimes lose jewelry of all sorts in the waves. Both ladies’ and men’s watches, finger rings and toe rings, and other such items can come off in the water and eventually be washed ashore. This is where a metal detector might be an advantage, but you may still find a lot of good things just by careful looking.
When you get your treasures home, you will want to have a place to spread them out, inspect them more closely, and clean them as necessary. If you have a garage with a workbench or some shelves to work on, this is ideal. What also works well is an old computer workstation desk that you are no longer using. These usually have multiple levels of shelves and cubbyholes that you can use for sorting items and storing cleaning materials and so on.
Having found a good place to work, the task of cleaning and polishing is at hand. Some research will tell you which cleaners, solvents or polishes will be needed for the types of objects you are working with. Soft cloths, such as old tee shirts, and brushes from perhaps a makeup set, are both good for this purpose. Having shined up your findings, with some research you may also discover that you have something quite valuable in your possession. Or, it may only be a pretty trinket to be admired. Either way, you have had a most enjoyable time finding it.
