The Many Benefits of Cinnamon
I have fond memories of mother buying cinnamon bread topped with frosting as a treat. We kids also sprinkled cinnamon powder and sugar on our toast as a topping. All our homemade bread now contains a teaspoon of cinnamon. People notice and compliment its flavor.
Cinnamon is an ancient spice. It was mentioned in many history books, including the Bible, often because of its aroma. It was mentioned in Chinese writings as far back as 2800 BC. Egypt and Rome both used cinnamon in their embalming processes. The Egyptians also used cinnamon for medicine and flavoring. In the Middle Ages, cinnamon was only affordable by the rich. But such spices became so hard to get by the Middle Ages that only the rich could afford them. Rank was determined by a person’s spice count.
The word ‘cinnamon’ comes from the Greek word kinnamomon and this comes from the name Ceylon. Cinnamon is the bark of the cinnamon tree. A rolled up piece of bark we call a cinnamon stick is officially called a quill. Cinnamon may be purchased in this form, or as a powder. Cinnamaldehyde is the chemical in cinnamon that gives it the fragrant flavor and taste.
Real cinnamon comes from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) that exports 11,000 tons a year. That would fill up 150,000,000 spice bottles the size we buy! However, most cinnamon powder sold in the US is actually cassia or Chinese cinnamon. To get the sweeter real stuff, you will probably have to go to a spice shop.
Though most commonly used as a spice, cinnamon has a variety of health benefits. Studies have shown that just 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon per day can lower LDL cholesterol. It may also help to regulate blood sugar, a great benefit to those with Type 2 diabetes.
The January 17th, 1995 issue of Weekly World News contained a list of 21 health problems or diseases that can be cured or at least helped by honey and cinnamon as researched by western scientists. These included toothache, common colds, insect bites, arthritis, heart diseased, and bladder infections.
The Maryland division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture showed that cinnamon reduces the spread of some cancer cells including lymphoma and leukemia. Cinnamon also has an anti-clotting effect on the blood. Some found cinnamon reduced their arthritic pain. Cinnamon inhibits bacterial growth and food spoilage, making it a natural food preservative.
Cinnamon helps fight E. coli bacteria and is a boost to brain functions. It is a rich source of calcium, manganese, iron, and fiber, and helps remove bile from the bowel thus reducing the risk of colon cancer. The fiber in it can also relieve the problems of irritable bowel syndrome and constipation.
Cinnamon contains antiparasitic, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It helps in fighting off yeast infections in the mouth and vagina, and reduces the risk of stomach ulcers and head lice. This remarkable list of health benefits is due to its three basic types of essential oils.

Overdosing on cinnamon can be toxic so use it with caution. Neither should you let cinnamon replace medications you are taking. Cinnamon should be stored in glass containers in a dark, dry, cool place. A sweet smell indicates it is still fresh.
