A Brief History of Solar Power Systems
When people think of solar energy, they marvel at the technological advances of modern science. But, solar panels have been around, at least in theory, for over 180 years. In 1839, a French scientist named Antoine César Becquerel, discovered an interesting occurrence, called the photovoltaic effect, during an experiment he was conducting. The photovoltaic effect involves the creation of a voltage in a material by bringing it in contact with electro-magnetic radiation from sunbeams.
This discovery happened while experimenting with an electrolytic cell made with two metal electrodes placed within an electrolyte solution; similar to how a car battery works. Antoine-Cesar Becquerel discovered that when the electrolytic cells were exposed to light, electrical power was created. The more light he applied, the greater the amount electricity produced. Becquerel essentially discovered a light powered battery. This type of battery is called a solar cell. A collection of these cells wired in series or in parallel is comprises a solar panel.
Close to 50 years after Becquerel’s experiments, Charles Fritts developed the world’s first solar cell using selenium coating sheets with a extremely thin coating of gold. For the next six decades scientists and inventors continued to experiment with solar power, using a combination of private funds and corporate assistance. One such inventor named Clarence Kemp from Baltimore created the first commercial solar energy powered water heater published a thesis on photoelectric effect and later received the Nobel Prize for his work.
An American scientist at Bell Laboratories named Russell Ohl created the first ever silicon solar cell in 1941. Bell Laboratories continued to build upon Ohl’s invention and in 1954 produced the first crystalline silicon solar panel. These pioneering solar cells managed an amazing level of efficiency achieving a 4% return on overall energy conversion. Over the years that followed, scientists all over the world expanded upon Bell Laboratories’ advancement and quickly developed solar cells producing 6% efficiency on overall energy generation.
Research and development into solar electric technologies experienced huge growth and produced its first real-world application at the start of the space age, more precisely, its use in the first space satellites. It’s not viable to launch satellites into space that rely on refueling or ran on standard batteries which would eventually become exhausted. A renewable power source was needed to permit satellites to remain in orbit for an indefinite period without needing to be recharged. Solar power fit that requisite flawlessly. In 1958, NASA launched the Vangaurd Spacecraft, which became the first satellite to reach Earth’s orbit and the first satellite to be powered by solar power.
America was the earliest country to finance the coordinated research and advancement of solar cells, which in 1980, yielded 20% efficiency on overall energy production. By 2000, American corporations had released many solar cells capable of producing 24% efficiency. In 2008, Emcore Photovoltaics and Spectrolab released a statement saying that they’ve reached new levels of power by designing a solar cell which yielded 28% efficiency.
No one knows where the hope of solar electric power will lead us. However, as the number of applications that use the use of solar electric power, the efficiency of solar cells will develop to promote expanded use. In the not so distant future, solar panels will be able to generate the majority of the electricity required to maintain the ever increasing hunger of our modern technological societies..
