Tea Packaging For Loose Green Tea And Flowering Tea
Tea packaging is incredibly crucial to the taste, life and look of tea – and this remains true for jasmine green tea, flowering tea, flowers teas and any type of loose leaf teas or tea ball.
The biggest enemies of tea are sunlight and air which may be why tea tins are so often used. To get the best flavour and look of tea, it must be kept in an airtight container and away from the light. Even though the old fashioned tea caddy was not generally airtight, at least it protected tea from light and so helped in preserving the quality of tea.
The optimum container for tea has sealable top, does not let in light and does not have previous flavors. Utilising this sort of storage will give tea the best chance of not losing too much freshness. It is also prudent to use a container which does not have a smell or flavor from previous use as this will negatively impact on tea stored in that container. Definitely stay away from plastic containers for this reason.
A recent purchase of several flowering tea at The Tea Centre, a specialty shop in Sydney, came with excellent foil/laminate packaging. This packaging was incredibly stylish, easy to use and did the job. And, regular use of the various tea packaging has not seen them deteriorate or become difficult to use. With no tea tin, quality packaging from a store may be used for smaller packages of tea.
There are some awesome innovations around tea bag packets including teabag sticks, origami teabags, teabags with arms, paper boats, stick shaped infusers and walking stick teabags – all great for flowers tea or any kind of loose leaf tea. As they are prototypes, I’m dubious about how brilliantly they would make flavorsome drinking tea, but they are heaps of fun if nothing else.
But, those ideas are for tea bags, not really for top quality loose leaf tea or flowering tea balls. There is no avoiding the fact that loose leaf tea, as well as flowering tea products benefit from the conservative view to packaging. The appropriate care remains this – air tight, dark packaging to keep light out and then, buy just a small amount of tea at any one time.
