Good For Your Heart – Chilli Pepper
Recent medical research has disclosed a fact of which herbalists have long been aware: that the active ingredient in chilli peppers that gives them their hot taste is good for your heart. The research was in fact carried out on rats but herbalists as well as the thousands of loyal users know that chilli pepper compounds, also known as cayenne peppers are extremely beneficial for humans too. Products based on chilli pepper or cayenne peppers, produced for that very purpose can be found at good herbal remedy suppliers.
Recent research shows that use of long-term dietary consumption of capsaicin, one of the most abundant components in chilli peppers on the genetically hypertensive rats, produced a reduction in blood pressure. Oh; and by the way, this was all carried out in China, generally regarded with respect when it comes to herbal remedies, making the research and the apparent need for it so late in the day, rather bizarre.. Use of herbal remedies by the Chinese is thousands of years old but it has apparently taken until now for someone to carry out the research! The predominance of raised blood pressure levels has been observed to be more than 20% in north-eastern China compared to 10-14% in south-western China. It is known that in the latter region, the population has a penchant for spicy foods, hot with chilli peppers.
For the technical amongst you, it is apparently the activation of the receptor channel found in the lining of blood vessels that leads to a rise in production of nitric oxide, a gaseous molecule known to protect blood vessels against inflammation and dysfunction. We knew it worked. Now we know why!
The research was not the first to look for a link between capsaicin and lower blood pressure but we understand that previous research has been focussed on the acute or short-term exposure to capsaicin, rather than long-term treatment with it. We must also reiterate that this research was undertaken in China on rodents with hypertension.
Researchers said further work was needed to prove the findings in humans, which in a way we find a touch amusing if not sad, given that the phenomenon has been known by herbalists for ages and the poor rats could have avoided their involuntary participation in the research! It’s not as though we are dealing with potentially dangerous, new and untried chemicals; Why practice on rats when there are millions of willing humans available?
Still, it is gratifying when science comes along and proves what some had previously regarded as old wives’ tales!
So, if you were considering a cayenne pepper diet or maybe have just learned how good capsaicin can be, the list of other benefits you can obtain from chilli peppers and cayenne pepper preparations is extensive and goes way beyond the scope of this article but there are plenty of articles dealing with the chilli pepper phenomenon.
