Uniting The World Through Art

For a portrait artist, the difficulty lies in capturing single emotions, moods, and moments. The living room walls of one Marion home are filled with portraits by a courageous, self taught artist, who lives there with his wife. In a large montage called “Faces,” he included an American tap dancer, an actor a scientist, the composite between three famous comedians, the traditional cast members of a long running science fiction TV series, a former TV reporter, various rock stars, athletes and entertainers, and his friends. He makes still photographs from videos to achieve his goal, which often nets him a face with emotions he didn’t anticipate. During the year and a half he spent painting the montage, he added more and more people who affected his life. More expert paintings information is located at pet portrait artists.

Individual portraits of the lead singer from Babes in Toyland, a Russian gymnast, and a songwriter decorate the other walls. He does most of his work in pencil, graphite, and charcoal. He tried conte crayon and then colored pencils. His first drawing with colored pencils is of himself and his wife, a native of Kobe, Japan, at their wedding. It gave him a chance to experiment with combinations of traditional American drawing and Japanese wood block print. Adding personal and Japanese symbols, he began the drawing with his wedding photograph, taken at City Hall in December 1996, as the foundation.

Featured in the drawing but not in the actual wedding is their trio of cats. One mask from Japanese opera is said to ward off evil spirits, and he uses this as the face of the first cat. In a position of good luck he decided to draw the second cat.

Another embellishment is their kimono dress in the drawing. He depicted his wife decorated in a flower called the kikyo, which is also her matriarchal symbol. He decided to draw in a gingko tree, past the third cat, behind the vertical blinds, outside the room. He got his inspiration for the gingko, which represents longevity, from a tree at the University of Iowa. Further your knowledge on paintings at portrait painting in oil.

The 1997 drawing is the couple’s first collaboration. His wife helped with idea work. The drawing has high sentimental value for them, said the wife. He would be delighted if he could conquer landscapes, as long as he can insert the figures he likes to draw so much.

He has achieved popular recognition for four of his pieces in a group, with one as the cover, and he feels no loss in not having an exhibit. Someone on the staff referred his art to the book editor. He received an email from the editor, who praised his artistic talent in combining portraiture with architecture, and weaving intelligence and humor throughout the work. All he drew as a child were action heroes and rock stars, and he has come a long way from then. No image or even impression is too hard for him now. He says its better than taking a picture, because you can add or change things.
